Participation

You are expected to participate in the discussion every day, so please come to class prepared. Participation includes asking questions about the course material, answering questions that I pose to the class, or volunteering information or in other ways. You will be expected to read sections of the book before they are discussed in class.  This will help you understand and participate in the discussion better. There may be occasional pop quizzes based on the reading assignments.

Homework

There will be a number of problems assigned per other week. Although homework problems will only be collected occasionally, you should work on homework problems regularly.

Bonus points

Some challenging problems will be assigned along with (routine) homework problems. If you show me a correct solution to one such problem (verbally, in my office hours), you will receive one extra point.

Grades

Your course grade will be based on quizzes & homework (10 points), two midterm exams (25 points each) and the final exam (40 points)*.

Important Dates

Final exam: Monday, May 3, 1-3pm, same room

Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who require accommodations for access and participation in this course must be registered with the Office of Disability Services (ODS). Please contact ODS at (312)413-2103 (voice) or (312)413-0123 (TTY).

Academic Integrity: I expect you to abide by the University's academic integrity guidelines. You can find the University's guidelines at http://www.uic.edu:80/depts/sja/integrit.htm

* If you maintain a good record of participation and homework, before the final exam, you may request to be considered for another grading scale, called early success option. After my approval, your term grade will be calculated as 20% quizzes & homework with two midterm exams (40% each).
